Ways to support the American Folk Festival

Each year, it takes more than $850,000 to put on the three days of music, food, crafts, performances, demonstrations and more that make up the Festival.  (For a list of current supporters click here.) In order to bring this three-day festival to Bangor's Waterfront, and to keep it admission free, we need your help.  There are many ways you can keep the American Folk Festival in Bangor.

Bequests and Planned Giving

Bequests are a gift to The American Folk Festival in your will, or revocable trust, proclaims your confidence that we will continue to pursue our mission and make a difference for future generations. A bequest is easy to arrange, does not affect your assets or cash flow during your lifetime, and is revocable.

A bequest can deliver a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of the balance remaining in your estate after taxes and specific bequests have been paid. Your bequest or trust distribution to us will reduce the taxable value of your estate for federal estate tax purposes, and is exempt from state inheritance taxes.

Bequests are an easy, low cost way of supporting The American Folk Festival's mission. Almost any kind of asset may be bequeathed, including cash, securities, tangible personal property, real estate; or a portion or remainder of an IRA, tax sheltered annuity, qualified pension or profit sharing plan.

We urge consultation with an attorney to better understand bequest options, whether creating a new will or amending an existing one. A charitable bequest reduces the value of an estate and therefore reduces both federal and state estate taxes. An attorney can best advise about applicable federal and state laws.

How Planned Gifts Support AFF's Mission

Unrestricted:
Permits the Board of Directors to allocate the gift to meet AFF's greatest needs.

Restricted:
Directs the gift to support a specified purpose or project such as showcasing a specific cultural or regional tradition, children's activities, or other AFF initiatives.

The majority of planned gifts are added to the organization's endowment, making them a permanent asset for AFF. At the direction of the Board of Directors, a specified portion of the total investment return for all endowed assets is spent each year in accord with the terms of the gifts. When contemplating a designated planned gift, we suggest that the donor consult with an adviser and a member of AFF's Development staff for suggestions and advice for your consideration. Please contact Robin Merchant, Development Coordinator, at (207)262-7764. All conversations are strictly confidential.
