The American Folk Festival offers activities for people of all ages. The Folk & Traditional Arts area features exhibits, demonstrations and discussions on various Maine Folk Art traditions. The Children & Family Folk Arts Area offers performances, games and activites for a younger audience.

Folk & Traditional Arts Activities

in 2007, the Folk and Traditional Arts area (in the area surrounding the Harbormaster's office at the center of the Festival), the Maine Folklife Center highlighted several of Maine's woodcarvers in ongoing demonstrations, and in narrative stage presentations. They included:

Stan Neptune (Native root carving)
Brian Theriault (Snowshoes)
Elvis Todorov (Greek Orthodox icons)
Tom Cote (Acadian carving)
Gordon Harde (hunting decoys)
Marsha Berkall ("wood spirits" and santas)
Arthur Essency (Marionettes)
Nadim Dlaikan (Lebanese instruments)

In addition, the popular "Taste of Maine" cooking demonstrations featured:
Sandy Oliver (Chowder)
Fay Harvey (pie)
Janice Bouchard (Ployes)
Jim Cunningham (reflector oven biscuits and camp cooking)


Children & Family Folk Activity Area

1n 2007, Children's Area activities offered lots of choices for kids and their families. Located in Pickering Square, several performers offered a variety of entertainment, including:


Nadia Dieudonne & Feet of Rhythm (Haitian ra-ra)
Men in Black (barbershop harmony)
Gary Szredzienski (Polish accordian)
Masaji "Candyman" Terasawa (Japanese Candy art)


Also, there were crafts, active games, and "quiet games" for all ages.

Thanks to the Maine Discovery Museum for helping to present the performances and activities that were offered in the Children's Area.
